(Ellen on a recent visit to the Island of Santorini in Greece)

Art is more than a hobby for me. It is a way for me to express my joy of family and excitement of life. It’s an expression of color and light.

Born in Toronto, Ohio my family moved to Orlando, Florida when I was six. I grew up in pre-Disney Florida in a “Florida cracker” home surrounded by orange trees. It was a time when I took my shoes off and walked barefoot when my mother didn’t catch me. Elementary school holds warm memories of pinafore dresses and patent leather shoes. I finished high school in Delray Beach, and graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia with a major in English.

I have always had an interest in the arts but slipped into the media from a rockhounding hobby that I shared with my father. Together we collected rocks and learned to polish them. To take the hobby to a new level I learned the art of silver and gold work at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Following college I married John Patterson. We have two sons and five grandchildren. In my non-painting life I have worked in the financial service industry for 26 years. I am a a Certified Financial Planner and a partner in Patterson Financial Associates.

Today design and color are emphasis in my watercolor and transparent acrylic paintings. I draw my inspiration from family and events around me and places I visit around the world. The world is also my classroom. I invite the viewer to take the joy and excitement with them.

My work has received numerous awards and many of my paintings are in private collections throughout the country.
